5 Glimmers | Leaving Traces

Searching for myself - studio shot

These little things have often helped me make sense of this one precious life.

I’ve been trying to find my way over the last few years, trying to find a way of sharing my art practice that feels like me. That isn't always easy when, even at 56, you still feel like you’re working out who that is. But perhaps that is the point of everything anyway... discovering who you are and realising you may never fully arrive.

Something hasn’t felt quite right for a while. A bit like a scratchy clothing label that keeps annoying you. I’ve tried to ignore it, but scratchy labels do serve a purpose. I think I’ve taken a few detours along the way, trying things on for size, trying on versions of who I thought I should be. But each step somehow led me back.

You may have seen my latest blog post, or perhaps not, but I lost my lovely mum three weeks ago. It felt important for me to share that because I often write about the feelings behind my work, and leaving out something so big felt inauthentic. How do you keep sharing while leaving out a life moment that changes everything?

Strangely, before this time I had already decided I wanted to return to sharing glimmers. Those small things that quietly hold us up.

And now, more than ever, it feels important to notice them.

So here are this week's five glimmers...

1. Music that gives you a hug

I’ve been listening to Burr Island and Sara Bareilles this week. Certain songs seem to arrive exactly when you need them, almost like someone reaching over and saying, I know.

2. Keep your eyes open for perfect timing

The things that unexpectedly appear in your feed or around you. A sentence, a photo, a conversation, a sign. I don’t think these moments are coincidence.

3. Write a list of things you love

When you feel a little lost or directionless, write down the things you love. The smallest things count. Music, colours, places, rituals, smells, films, foods. Sometimes it’s less about finding yourself and more about remembering yourself.

4. Food as care, not control

My sister has been gently influencing my thinking through her non-UPF journey . Not through eating less, but through thinking differently — eating more of the things your body actually needs to feel good.

5. Homing

I listened to a podcast episode of Homing with Patrick Williams this week and loved the idea that home isn’t always somewhere you arrive at. Sometimes it’s something you slowly return to.

I'd love to know your glimmers too. The songs, recipes, books, moments or thoughts that found you this week.
