No Glimmers but | Wouldn't it be nice if....?

Lemons on a tree in my garden and blue sky days

I wasn't sure I was going to write a Glimmers email this week.

It's been a difficult week, and if I'm honest, I didn't really feel like finding five lovely things to share with you.

Everything felt a little too much.

But i’ve been thinking about things I’d like for my life going forward.  I'm not particularly good at goals.

Goals can sometimes feel like another list of things I need to achieve, improve or make happen.

And I'm a little tired of making things happen.

So instead I started asking myself a much simpler question:

Wouldn't it be nice if…?

Not what do I need to achieve?

Not what should I be doing?

Just… wouldn't it be nice if?

And I started writing down whatever came to mind, without editing them too much.

my art business earned enough to comfortably pay the bills, with a little left over for fun?

I had more time to garden, sew, cook and make things simply because I felt like it?

I had the time and energy to take better care of myself?

I didn't feel like I was constantly moving from one worry to the next?

I had enough freedom to actually enjoy my life while I am living it, rather than always thinking about what’s coming next.

I could help the people I love create the lives they want for themselves.

I had the energy and money to make our home feel exactly the way we want it to.

I could stop worrying so much about whether I’m doing enough.

There was more time for beauty - for making it, noticing it and enjoying it.

I could relax into being myself a little more?

And perhaps the biggest one…

Wouldn't it be nice if  peace and kindness in the world didn't always feel just out of reach?

We aren't really encouraged to talk about wanting more when we already have so much to be grateful for.

And I don't want this to sound as though I'm unhappy with my life. I'm not.

I have a beautiful life.

But I've realised that gratitude and longing can sit alongside each other.

You can be incredibly grateful for what you have and still wish for a little more ease.

You can love your life and still want it to feel softer.

And perhaps that's what I'm really asking for.

Not a completely different life.

Just this life, with a little more space to actually enjoy it.

So I'm wondering what would come up for you if you gave yourself permission to ask the same question - not what should I achieve, or what do I need to fix, but simply…

Wouldn't it be nice if…?

And then kept writing until we surprised ourselves.

Don't worry about whether the things you write are sensible or achievable.

Don't worry about whether they sound ambitious enough.

Don't worry about whether you're grateful enough to be wanting them.

Just see what comes.

Because sometimes it's hard to know what we really want until we give ourselves permission to want it.

And maybe, amongst all those little wishes, there might be a glimpse of where we want to go next so that we can take a step towards it.

A little glimmer of possibility.
